Granite Peaks and Stagecoach Trails: A Yosemite Odyssey
Discover the rugged heritage and sky-piercing summits of California’s most iconic wilderness.
Our journey through Yosemite began with a step back in time at the Pioneer Yosemite History Center. Amongst the scent of woodsmoke and sun-warmed pine, we watched black horses pull a heritage stagecoach past weather-beaten log cabins and stone chimneys. These rustic structures, including the old Yosemite Transportation Co building with its lattice windows and green benches, stand as silent witnesses to the valley's earliest travellers. Following the rushing Merced River, where clear water tumbles over grey river stones, we traded history for the open road. Driving a silver convertible with the top down, the scent of evergreen forest became our constant companion. We navigated long, straight asphalt stretches that bisect the dense timber, always pointing the bonnet toward the distant, snow-dusted peaks of the High Sierra under a brilliant, wispy blue sky. The true scale of the park revealed itself from the higher ledges. We stood over the vast valley, gazing at the sheer granite face of Half Dome and the powerful white plume of Vernal Fall cascading down the cliffs. Amidst the grandeur, the landscape tells a story of resilience; we traversed ridges of charred timber and ghostly white branches—scars of past fires—where the forest is slowly, surely reclaiming the scorched earth beneath the watchful eye of the granite giants.
